Kids in this Ohio town are getting "tickets" for wearing their bike helmets - the tickets are redeemable at the local ice cream shop.

BRIMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Ohio — A local police chief who has been known for his tongue-in-cheek open letters to criminals is now opening up about another policy of sorts.

As written on the department’s Facebook page, Brimfield officers are encouraged to write as many tickets as they can and should also target a specific group.

“My officers will have a quota for tickets … at least one per shift. We are going to be profiling, too,” Chief David Oliver wrote last week.  “We will target a specific group, with the express purpose of writing as many tickets as possible. I am strongly encouraging my officers to write as many as they can, every shift, every day … it is called Operation Safe Summer.”

According to Oliver, officers will be on the lookout for children under the age of 12 who are wearing a helmet while biking.

If “caught,” those kids will be stopped and issued a “ticket” for a free ice cream cone from Frank’s Drive-in as a reward.

“This is the kind of ticket writing I REALLY enjoy,” Oliver concluded in his post.

The program begins June 3 and will continue for several weeks.

“We traffic stop them and give them a ticket,” said patrol officer Russ Diehl. “I absolutely love it.”

Monday afternoon, Diehl spotted several kids riding on bikes on the streets of Brimfield, like 9-year-old Olivia Jones.

“Police officer came and gave us a ticket for ice cream for being safe and wearing helmets,” she said. “I’m getting chocolate chip cookie dough.”

Olivia was joined by her sister, two cousins and aunt Kelly, who were strolling through town.

“My son was all over it last week,” Kelly said. “As soon as he heard about it, he came home from school, riding around with his helmet on, just waiting for somebody to pull him over.”

Operation Safe Summer has been a Brimfield tradition for many years. Frank’s Drive-In owner Joe Follen said he’s anxious to rewards kids.

“I guess it just gives the children a good incentive, maybe, to do something good,” he said, “not only to wear their bicycle helmet, but also to do good acts of kindness.”
