About six months ago, an 11-year-old girl from Columbus, Ga., wrote a Christmas card to an unknown soldier serving in Afghanistan.
Katie Grace Hartley told WTVM 9 News she was inspired by the work of armed service members and thought she'd write a letter to "see who it goes to."
In it, she wrote that she was praying for the soldier and hoped they could one day meet.
Sgt. Richard Gromek received that letter just before he was due to return home. He told the station that the troop's withdrawal timing had delayed mail delivery and prevented him from responding.
But once back, he got in touch with Hartley's grandfather, and the two set up a surprise introduction.
"I don't know how to explain it," Hartley said after meeting Gromek. "I'm just very happy right now."
It goes to prove that a little action can go -- literally -- a long way.
