Kindness came in a variety of flavors this afternoon in Dorchester’s Savin Hill neighborhood — two free scoops of ice cream to bring together a community shaken by the bloody ambush Monday of a young mother out walking her baby in a stroller.
“It’s really good to see people come out, be here, and support each other,” said Joe Conway, the owner of Savin Scoop at 107 Savin Hill Ave.
Conway and his store manager scooped out Maple Walnut, Monster Mash, and other flavors for as many as 70 people who stopped by his shop for the free ice cream. The event had been previously planned as a “Cash Mob,” a grass-roots effort organized through Facebook or other social media that sends crowds to local businesses to stimulate patronage, but with the stabbing of the 21-year-old mother, it was also dubbed “A Random Act of Kindness.”
On Monday, Conway saw the stabbing victim, Angeleek Barros, stagger to the glass door of his business. She collapsed and Conway rushed to her, applying pressure on her wounds.
Barros was in serious but stable condition at Boston Medical Center today.
Samia Jones, the 17-year-old woman who allegedly stabbed Barros, was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault to murder and is being held on $50,000 cash bail. Police are seeking Jones’ boyfriend, Daquan Sparks, 19, who allegedly held the victim while Jones stabbed her.
Sparks, the father of the victim’s child, allegedly called Barros and lured her to an address on Midland St. by telling her he had shoes for the infant. But when Barros arrived, he restrained her while Jones stabbed her six times, according to authorities. Jones and Sparks also have a 4-month-old child together.
The free ice cream was offered between 1 and 2:30 p.m., compliments of the store, and was sponsored by Vargas & Vargas Insurance and Cash Mob Dorchester, which is a group that looks to take local money and invest it in local businesses.
“Please come out and help this great local business after a long winter, enjoy a free ice cream cone and make our second cash mob of 2013 a success,’’ Carlos Vargas, the insurance company owner, posted on his Facebook page.
“This is a very safe area,” Vargas said today, talking with area residents inside Savin Scoop. “I’ve been in Dorchester for 33 years and 20 years ago this happened all the time, but today, it’s a shocker, it’s tough to hear that something as bad as that would happen here.”
Boston police arrested Jones soon after the stabbing.
