Hollywood mega director James Cameron donates his Deepsea Challenger sub to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Falmouth, MA

FALMOUTH — Marine scientists on Cape Cod are teaming with filmmaker and explorer James Cameron to advance deep sea research.
Cameron announced Tuesday that he's giving his Deepsea Challenger sub to Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution as part of a partnership to speed up ocean research and discovery.
The announcement comes on the one-year anniversary of Cameron's record solo dive in the sub to the deepest place on earth — the Challenger Deep in the Marianna Trench, nearly 36,000 feet below sea level.
Woods Hole scientists say they haven't yet determined the full range of applications for the sub system. But some uses include using the Deepsea Challenger's cameras and lighting systems on their own remotely-operated vehicle.
Cameron is the Academy Award-winning director of movies including "The Terminator," "The Abyss" and "Titanic."
