The NBA gave us a tear-jerker of a moment during last night's NBA Draft, allowing a player who couldn't be selected his moment on stage.</div>

Isaiah Austin was a top center prospect out of Baylor who was expected to be selected until his diagnosis with a rare disease ended his career. Austin has Marfan Syndrome, a genetic disorder that affects the heart, eyes, circulatory system, and skeleton in about one in 5,000 people. He was diagnosed with the disease during the routine genetic testing that accompanies the draft.</div>

On June 22, Austin announced that his playing career was over.</div>

NBA commissioner Adam Silver honored Austin Thursday, announcing him as a selection of the league and allowing him to walk across the stage and pose for his draft photo. Great moment.</div>

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Verdana, Tahoma, sans-serif; font-size: 1.1em; line-height: 1.3em; margin-bottom: 1em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
A Somerville couple woke up today with their twin boys nestled in cribs at home for the first time since the babies’ March births — separated by a stunning 24 days — at Tufts Medical Center.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Verdana, Tahoma, sans-serif; font-size: 1.1em; line-height: 1.3em; margin-bottom: 1em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Lindalva Pinheiro da Silva and Ronaldo Antunes smiled as they left the hospital yesterday holding their twin boys, Alexandre and Ronaldo, in their car seats after a long and emotionally exhausting journey that few parents ever have to endure.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Verdana, Tahoma, sans-serif; font-size: 1.1em; line-height: 1.3em; margin-bottom: 1em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
“It’s amazing. It’s beautiful. We are really, really happy,” said Antunes before placing baby Ronaldo in the waiting arms of Antunes’ excited 9-year-old daughter, Madeleine.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Verdana, Tahoma, sans-serif; font-size: 1.1em; line-height: 1.3em; margin-bottom: 1em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Not only do the twins have different birthdays — March 2 and March 26 — they also have different zodiac signs, Pisces and Aries.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Verdana, Tahoma, sans-serif; font-size: 1.1em; line-height: 1.3em; margin-bottom: 1em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
So-called delayed interval deliveries like da Silva’s are extremely rare and even less common when they are nearly a month apart, according to Tufts.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Verdana, Tahoma, sans-serif; font-size: 1.1em; line-height: 1.3em; margin-bottom: 1em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Da Silva’s due date was June 18 but she unexpectedly went into labor at the end of February. Tufts doctors tried to hold off the delivery but on March 2 it became obvious da Silva was going to give birth to one of the babies, said Dr. Sabrina Craigo, chief of maternal-fetal medicine at Tufts Medical Center.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Verdana, Tahoma, sans-serif; font-size: 1.1em; line-height: 1.3em; margin-bottom: 1em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Alexandre was born weighing only 1 pound, 10 ounces, 24 weeks and five days into the pregnancy, and was immediately given respiratory support.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Verdana, Tahoma, sans-serif; font-size: 1.1em; line-height: 1.3em; margin-bottom: 1em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
After giving birth to Alexandre, da Silva’s labor began to slow, and doctors decided it was best to just wait before delivering Ronaldo.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Verdana, Tahoma, sans-serif; font-size: 1.1em; line-height: 1.3em; margin-bottom: 1em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
“What we did was just hold back and not intervene and wait and try to gain some time,” said Craigo. “Fortunately we gained a month.”</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Verdana, Tahoma, sans-serif; font-size: 1.1em; line-height: 1.3em; margin-bottom: 1em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Antunes said waiting for the second twin to be delivered was trying.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Verdana, Tahoma, sans-serif; font-size: 1.1em; line-height: 1.3em; margin-bottom: 1em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
“One day turns into one week, two weeks, three weeks, 24 days, and Ronaldo came out with no need for anything, no breathing tube, nothing,” he said. “It was tough but now I can tell it was worth it.”</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Verdana, Tahoma, sans-serif; font-size: 1.1em; line-height: 1.3em; margin-bottom: 1em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Ronaldo was born March 26 weighing 3 pounds, 3 ounces.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Verdana, Tahoma, sans-serif; font-size: 1.1em; line-height: 1.3em; margin-bottom: 1em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Both babies are healthy, said Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Associate Medical Director Dr. Gina Geis, who attended Ronaldo’s delivery.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #262626; font-family: Arial, Verdana, Tahoma, sans-serif; font-size: 1.1em; line-height: 1.3em; margin-bottom: 1em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
“They have overcome a lot of hardships but they are doing phenomenally now,” she said. “They will be monitored very closely once they go home, but we have great hopes that they will do just fine.”</div>

NASHUA, N.H. (AP) — A Boston Marathon bombing survivor who was photographed in an iconic image of the attacks is back at work.</div>

The Nashua Telegraph (http://bit.ly/ThCQFX ) reports that 28-year-old Jeff Bauman returned to the Nashua, New Hampshire, Costco store this week, 14 months after the bombings that killed three people and injured about 260 others.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; direction: ltr; font-family: Georgia, Century, Times, serif; font-size: 15.199999809265137px; line-height: 21px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizelegibility; vertical-align: baseline;">
An Associated Press photo captured an ashen and bloodied Bauman being hustled away in a wheelchair by rescuers including a cowboy hat-wearing Carlos Arredondo. Bauman was later able to describe to police one of the two brothers accused of carrying out the attacks. He lost both his legs above the knee.</div>

When the glory and the heartbreak of the World Cup is shining through flatscreen TVs in our living rooms, it's easy to forget that the sport reigns supreme in many areas of the Earth where people can barely afford to play the game.</div>

When Ethan King left his home in Michigan to visit Mozambique with his father in 2009, he saw children playing soccer with balls made from plastic bags wrapped in twine. Ethan also saw, for the very first time, kids raising kids because older generations had died of disease. Although the reality before him was jarring, he saw an opportunity to help through a simple object: a soccer ball.</div>

But when so many of the same communities that Charity Ball serves are grappling with humanitarian crises -- such as a lack of clean water or quality education -- why give soccer balls?</div>

According to the nonprofit, allowing kids to play soccer also <a href="http://charityball.org/about/" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #e49400; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_hplink">reduces crime, gives children a sense of value and promotes friendship</a> within a community.</div>

Launching Charity Ball wasn't easy. The first cold call Ethan made to solicit ball donations resulted in quick, hard-to-swallow rejection. But he kept trying. Eventually, major athletic equipment producers, like <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3rgGOz942WY" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #e49400; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_hplink">Franklin, Rawlings and Wilson, jumped on board</a>.</div>

It's no secret that soccer's positive influences reach far beyond the playing field, and the World Cup has created the perfect opportunity to change lives through the sport.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; direction: ltr; font-family: Georgia, Century, Times, serif; font-size: 15.199999809265137px; line-height: 21px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizelegibility; vertical-align: baseline;">

Traveling in a motorcade in the back seat of a blue Ford Focus that slowed to a stop, he quickly emerged and began to bless the lady as well as two children in the small group. To shouts of “Bravo” and “Grazie,” he waved to everyone, shook hands and got back in the car.</div>

Chen then treated about 200 homeless people from the Mission on Wednesday to a <a href="http://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/Chinese-Billionaire-Free-Lunch-Central-Park-Chen-Guangbiao-264547951.html" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #e49400; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_hplink">lunch in Central Park</a> that included such decadent entrees as sesame-seed-encrusted tuna and beef filet, NBC New York reported.</div>

The philanthropist also made a donation to the Mission.</div>

The event wasn’t without entertainment.</div>

While some have called Chen "eccentric" for his outrageous stunts, advocates say he’s bringing some much-needed hope to a downtrodden community.</div>

"Our thought was if someone wants to treat them to an amazing event," Craig Mayes, executive director of the Mission, told NBC, "something they would never experience on their own, maybe even <a href="http://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/Chinese-Billionaire-Free-Lunch-Central-Park-Chen-Guangbiao-264547951.html" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #e49400; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_hplink">a kernel of hope that life could be different again,</a> we're in for that reason. While most kids end up at camp during the summer, canoeing and rock climbing during the warmest months of the year, the campers of<a href="http://www.painlessbuthopeful.org/" style="color: #2e538f; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none;" target="external"> Camp Painless But Hopeful</a>, which kicks off Friday, have to wait until there is a chill in the air before packing up and heading to the lake.</div>

That is because the kids who attend Camp Painless but Hopeful all suffer from an extremely rare genetic disorder <a href="http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/video/young-girl-battles-rare-medical-condition-16716281" style="color: #2e538f; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none;">called congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis (CIPA)</a>. The disorder disrupts signals sent in the nervous system and results in both the inability to feel pain and to sweat, which makes people with CIPA extremely vulnerable to becoming overheated.</div>

The camp was founded by Tara Blocker, whose teenage daughter Ashlyn suffers from CIPA.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.199999809265137px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
"She's been wanting to pack for the last month," said Blocker of Ashlyn. "She's definitely ready to go."</div>

Blocker was inspired to start the camp, based in rural Georgia, after her daughter told her about a dream she had of going to a camp with other kids like her.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.199999809265137px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
"It was a very, very vivid dream," said Blocker. "I was floored. I said 'O.K., let's do it.' From that point on, it was my mission to make her dream come true."</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.199999809265137px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
Tara Blocker and her husband, John, had met in person only one other family with a child who had CIPA, before starting the camp. In fact when Ashlyn was first diagnosed, Blocker said she became despondent because even online she couldn't find other families who had children with the disorder.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.199999809265137px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
<strong style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;"><a href="http://abcnews.go.com/Health/MedicalMysteries/story?id=3679532" style="color: #2e538f; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none;">Medical Mystery: A World Without Pain</a></strong></div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.199999809265137px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
It wasn't until the family went to the press with their story, when Ashlyn was a toddler, that they started to hear from other families. Although the Blockers were featured on multiple television shows and in newspapers, they were still usually contacted by other families in similar situations online or over the phone.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.199999809265137px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
When the camp first started in 2011, it was the first time Tara Blocker was able to meet families she had been corresponding with in person.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.199999809265137px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
"To know there are other people out there walking in your shoes every day, to come in contact with them every day [during camp] is a special experience," said Blocker.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.199999809265137px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
The first year of the camp there were 11 campers, who came with their families, this year there will be 15 families for a total of 56 people. The 15 campers range in age from 4 to 17.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.199999809265137px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
While 15 campers may not seem like a lot, it is a huge number for people with CIPA. The genetic mutation is incredibly rare, and there is little information on how many people are afflicted worldwide. Experts say they estimate about 50 to 100 families could carry the mutation worldwide. The disease often results in patients' accidentally self-mutilating because they don't feel the pain that might stop them from scratching their skin raw or biting through their tongue when teething.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.199999809265137px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
Blocker said one key part of the camp is making time for parents to swap stories and advice about how to safely raise their children.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.199999809265137px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
"We're able to talk about things that happen throughout the year. There's such a huge sense of comfort [discussing] things that have worked and things that don't work," said Blocker.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.199999809265137px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
Ashlyn at age 14 is one of the older campers, and Tara Blocker said one key bit of information they have passed along was how important regular eye check-ups are for children with CIPA. As an 8-month-old, Ashlyn had a severe corneal abrasion that doctors had no idea occurred until they caught it during a routine eye visit.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.199999809265137px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
"We're able to pass that information along [to other parents]," said Blocker. "That's something you rely on pain to tell you that 'my eyes are hurting.' They don't have that luxury."</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.199999809265137px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
The day-to-day schedule of Camp Painless But Hopeful, which is held at a campsite designed for sick children, features plenty of activities from zip lining to canoeing and crafts. Although there is a medical lodge onsite, Blocker said the goal for the three-day long camp is to have as normal an experience as possible without excluding kids from activities just because they could possibly get hurt.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.199999809265137px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
"Several of the parents are registered nurses so we are covered," said Blocker, who points out that the camper's parents will be the most familiar with keeping them safe anyway.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.199999809265137px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
Blocker said founding the camp and running it for two years has been a great experience, but she says she will be happy to hand off duties eventually.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.199999809265137px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
"Ashlyn said she wants to take my job as camp director [when she's older], and that's just fine," said Blocker.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.199999809265137px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
When the family first drove to the site, Blockers said she remembered watching Ashlyn from her side-view mirror, looking for her reaction. As they entered the camp site, Ashlyn gasped, "This is exactly what my dream looks like!"</div>

Mike Carey, of Dallas, Georgia, never imagined that he would be participating in pageants. But as dancing partner to his 12-year-old daughter McKenzie, Carey has spent a good amount of time on stage.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.199999809265137px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
McKenzie has mitochondrial disease, which affects the 12-year-old’s ability to speak and move and has left her in a wheelchair.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.199999809265137px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
The disease results from the failure of mitochondria, which are responsible for 90 percent of the body’s energy. As the mitochondria fail, so do the cells. According to the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation, mitochondrial disease usually damages cells in heart, liver and skeletal muscles and respiratory systems, as well as the brain.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.199999809265137px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
McKenzie’s mother, Tammy Carey, started putting her daughter into pageants at age 5 as a way to bond with her daughter and to help McKenzie meet new friends.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.199999809265137px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
“We’re trying to figure out ways to help our daughter and help her enjoy life, and pageants give her an opportunity to be like other children,” said Tammy Carey, who noted that McKenzie can’t speak but understands those around her.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.199999809265137px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">

However, McKenzie’s condition confined her to a wheelchair, creating a problems for the competition.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.199999809265137px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
Since Tammy Carey refused to enter her daughter only in pageants for special needs children, she had to figure out a plan for McKenzie when she was needed to perform onstage. Eventually during a particularly hectic pageant day, Mike Carey had an idea.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.199999809265137px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
“You leave it up to me,” Mick Carey told his wife before taking the stage with his daughter. “I wheeled her up on the stage and I did a wheelie across the stage and I picked her up [to dance]. ... I made up a dance in my head. The crowd went crazy.”</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.199999809265137px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
The pair has been performing together in pageants ever since and Mike Carey estimates he’s planned out seven dances for his daughter. McKenzie has won about 20 pageants, according to her mom.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.199999809265137px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
At a recent pageant, Carey’s son taped the pair’s latest performance and put it online to raise awareness about the disease as the family <a href="http://www.gofundme.com/mckenzieshope" rel="nofollow" style="color: #2e538f; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none;" target="external">raises money online to fund medical treatments</a> for McKenzie. <div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.199999809265137px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
“I’m like ‘Holy cow where did this come from?’” said Mike Carey.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.199999809265137px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
The pair aren’t stopping now. They’re already planning to attend a national pageant in Nebraska. McKenzie’s mom is working on the outfits and make-up and her dad is already choreographing his next dance.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.199999809265137px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
“If I get one person [inspired], it made the whole song and whole thing worthwhile,” said Carey. “It’s like an unspoken message. This dance is alike an unspoken testimony and shows bond and love between a father and daughter.”</div>

<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, Georgia; font-size: 14.399999618530273px; line-height: 20px; padding: 15px 0px 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Edita Tracey likes to describe her infant daughter as her miracle baby. The name seems appropriate due to the girl’s delivery — she was delivered in just 30 seconds while Tracey was being treated for a deadly cardiac condition.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, Georgia; font-size: 14.399999618530273px; line-height: 20px; padding: 15px 0px 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
When Tracey was 36 weeks pregnant, she started to feel some pressure on her back. Initially she didn’t think much of it as she was nearing her ninth month of pregnancy.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, Georgia; font-size: 14.399999618530273px; line-height: 20px; padding: 15px 0px 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
“I was close to nine-months pregnant. It’s normal to feel tired and have some pain in the back,” said Tracey, 35.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, Georgia; font-size: 14.399999618530273px; line-height: 20px; padding: 15px 0px 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
However, Tracey called for help as the pain felt different. The doctors who ran tests and scanned her chest found a potentially catastrophic condition called aortic dissection. The aorta artery, which runs directly from the heart, was rupturing due to high blood pressure.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, Georgia; font-size: 14.399999618530273px; line-height: 20px; padding: 15px 0px 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Tracey was rushed to emergency surgery, where doctors performed a Cesarean section in just 30 seconds and safely delivered her daughter.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, Georgia; font-size: 14.399999618530273px; line-height: 20px; padding: 15px 0px 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Doctors then performed a nine-hour open-heart surgery on Tracey to repair the tear. When she woke up, she had no idea of the ordeal she had just gone through.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, Georgia; font-size: 14.399999618530273px; line-height: 20px; padding: 15px 0px 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
“I was just happy that I was alive and our daughter was alive,” she said. “I think that the baby saved my life.”</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, Georgia; font-size: 14.399999618530273px; line-height: 20px; padding: 15px 0px 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Both mother and baby are now at home as Tracey gets used to caring for her 6-week-old daughter.</div>

As a young cop out for the first time on patrol car duty, Gordon Cameron was trained to keep his eyes open. A car speeding toward the local hospital, however, was not exactly difficult to spot.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.199999809265137px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
The driver, Glenn Ward, told Cameron that his wife was having a baby in the back seat and immediately left for the hospital to get help.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.199999809265137px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
Cameron stayed behind as the woman gave birth to a baby girl. Recalling the incident to <a href="http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/police-officer-reunites-in-moncton-with-woman-he-helped-deliver-52-years-ago-1.2676438" style="color: #2e538f; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none;" target="_"blank"">CBC News</a>, Cameron remembered: "I opened up the back door and I heard this lady, laying on her back and saying, ‘Don’t just stand there, hand me my baby.'"</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.199999809265137px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
After the roadside delivery, both mother and child were admitted to the hospital. But Cameron did not stick around long enough to find out more about them.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.199999809265137px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
Over the next 50 years, he often wondered what had become of the newborn and where she was now. Hoping to learn about the family in the 1956 Ford Meteor, Cameron contacted the Edmonton Journal and reporter Brent Wittmeier started "fishing."</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.199999809265137px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
"This is what I do. I dig for people, and I try to find them," said Wittmeier. He mined the archive, searched online directories and called every "Ward" in Alberta, but none were related. Using a "pre-Internet version of 'reverse look-up,'" he sifted through the residents that had lived at the address Cameron provided. Among them were "C. Glen Ward" and his wife, Pauline.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.199999809265137px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
When further investigation led nowhere, Wittmeier made up his mind. He resolved to make a "last-ditch effort" to locate the family. He would dial one more number. Glenn and Pauline Ward--now retired in Sackville, New Brunswick--picked up the phone. "When it panned out, I couldn't believe it," Wittmeier remembered.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.199999809265137px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
Wittmeier connected the Wards and Cameron in 2012. Cameron has been in touch with them ever since. Still, it was not until two weeks ago that the retired police officer laid eyes on the now-grown woman once more.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.199999809265137px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
Cameron had returned to Moncton, in New Brunswick, to attend the funeral of three Royal Canadian Mountain Police gunned down on duty on June 4. The somber visit took its emotional and physical toll on the 81-year-old. After collapsing in the crowd due to dehydration, he was rushed into an ambulance.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.199999809265137px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
When she heard of the crisis, Terri Ward, 52, did not hesitate.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.199999809265137px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
"I was on a day off, but I went right up," she said.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.199999809265137px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
She and her parents met Cameron at the hospital and assured him that he was in good hands. They would know. Ward is a nurse at the hospital.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.199999809265137px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
"My wife and I and our daughter were up to see him every day until he left to go home to fly back to Alberta," says Glenn Ward, 77. "For my daughter, it meant an awful lot. Terri and him hit it right off."</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.199999809265137px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
Cameron has recovered and has since returned to Edmonton, but Glenn Ward is confident that the two will stay in touch. "Maybe she'll get out West to see him," muses Ward. "I think she'd like that."</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15.199999809265137px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
Despite the alarming circumstances, Terri Ward is grateful for the unexpected quality time together: "He was only supposed to be in town for a little while, but I guess things have a funny way of turning around."</div>

Few understand the adage "better late than never" as well as Lela Babb Burden.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; direction: ltr; font-family: Georgia, Century, Times, serif; font-size: 15.199999809265137px; line-height: 21px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizelegibility; vertical-align: baseline;">
On Tuesday, the 111-year-old was awarded <a href="http://www.wvec.com/news/Special-graduation----263554511.html" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #e49400; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_hplink">an honorary high school diploma from Booker T. Washington High School</a> in Norfolk, Virginia, more than nine decades after she ended her formal education.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; direction: ltr; font-family: Georgia, Century, Times, serif; font-size: 15.199999809265137px; line-height: 21px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizelegibility; vertical-align: baseline;">
Burden, who was born in 1903 when Theodore Roosevelt was president, <a href="http://www.vhca.org/faces-stories/mrs-lela-babb-burden/" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #e49400; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_hplink">was raised by her aunt and uncle</a>, according to the Virginia Health Care Association. When she was in fourth grade, schools in her area were temporarily closed due to a flu epidemic, and she never returned.</div>

Burden's <a href="http://www.wvec.com/news/Special-graduation----263554511.html" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #e49400; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_hplink">extended family was on hand to see her receive the honor</a>, which came as a surprise to the supercentenarian. Had she enrolled in high school, WVEC reported that Booker T. Washington is the school she would have attended.</div>

"Mrs. Burden has contributed to this community for 111 years," Samuel T. King, superintendent of schools, said during the graduation ceremony, according to the outlet. "She made sacrifices, <a href="http://www.wvec.com/news/Special-graduation----263554511.html" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #e49400; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_hplink">but she never relinquished her commitment to lifelong learning</a>. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #4b4b4b; font-family: 'PT Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 13.60000228881836px; line-height: 21px; margin-bottom: 21px;">
A class of drug currently being used to treat leukemia has the unexpected side-effect of boosting immune responses against many different cancers, reports a new study.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #4b4b4b; font-family: 'PT Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 13.60000228881836px; line-height: 21px; margin-bottom: 21px;">
The drugs, called p110δ inhibitors, have shown such remarkable efficacy against certain leukemias in recent clinical trials that patients on the placebo were switched to the real drug. Until now, however, they have not been tested in other types of cancer.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #4b4b4b; font-family: 'PT Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 13.60000228881836px; line-height: 21px; margin-bottom: 21px;">
The new study, led by scientists at University College London and the Babraham Institute, Cambridge and <a href="http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v510/n7505/full/nature13444.html" style="color: #4db2ec; text-decoration: none !important;" target="_blank">published in Nature</a>, provides the first evidence that such drugs can significantly restrict tumor growth and spread and reduce the chances of relapse for a broad range of cancers. The researchers at UCL, the Babraham Institute and Queen Mary University of London, together with scientists from Genentech, South San Francisco, showed that inhibition of the p110δ enzyme helps to boost the body’s immune system to kill tumor cells. The research was funded by Cancer Research UK, the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council and the Wellcome Trust.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #4b4b4b; font-family: 'PT Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 13.60000228881836px; line-height: 21px; margin-bottom: 21px;">
</div>
<div class="alignleft" float:="" left="" style="background-color: white; color: #4b4b4b; float: left; font-family: 'PT Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 13.60000228881836px; line-height: 21px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-right: 21px; margin-top: 6px;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #4b4b4b; font-family: 'PT Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 13.60000228881836px; line-height: 21px;">“Our study shows that p110δ inhibitors have the potential to offer effective immunity to many types of cancer by unleashing the body’s own immune response,” says study co-leader Professor Bart Vanhaesebroeck of the UCL Cancer Institute, who first discovered the p110δ enzyme in 1997. “p110δ is highly expressed and important in white blood cells, called ‘leukocytes’. Given that leukemias are the result of leukocytes becoming cancerous, they are a natural target for p110δ inhibitors. Now, we have shown that blocking p110δ also has the remarkable effect of boosting the body’s immune response against leukemias as well as other cancers.”</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #4b4b4b; font-family: 'PT Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 13.60000228881836px; line-height: 21px; margin-bottom: 21px;">
</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #4b4b4b; font-family: 'PT Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 13.60000228881836px; line-height: 21px; margin-bottom: 21px;">
The team showed that inhibiting p110δ in mice significantly increased cancer survival rates across a broad range of tumor types, both solid and hematological cancers. For example, mice in which p110δ was blocked survived breast cancer for almost twice as long as mice with active p110δ. Their cancers also spread significantly less, with far fewer and smaller tumors developing. Survival after surgical removal of primary breast cancer tumors was also vastly improved, which has important clinical implications for stopping breast cancer from returning following surgery. The team’s data further show that following p110δ inhibition, the immune system could develop an effective memory response to completely fight off the cancer.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #4b4b4b; font-family: 'PT Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 13.60000228881836px; line-height: 21px; margin-bottom: 21px;">
Lead author Dr Khaled Ali, who is now based at Amgen, San Francisco, says: “When we first introduced tumors in p110δ-deficient mice, we expected them to grow faster because p110δ is important for the immune system. Instead, some tumors started shrinking. When we investigated this unexpected effect, we found that p110δ is especially important in so-called regulatory T cells which are suppressive immune cells that the tumors engage to protect themselves against immune attack.”</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #4b4b4b; font-family: 'PT Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 13.60000228881836px; line-height: 21px; margin-bottom: 21px;">
</div>
<div class="alignright" float:="" right="" style="background-color: white; color: #4b4b4b; float: right; font-family: 'PT Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 13.60000228881836px; line-height: 21px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-left: 21px; margin-top: 6px;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #4b4b4b; font-family: 'PT Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 13.60000228881836px; line-height: 21px;">The p110δ enzyme is a member of the PI3-kinase family, and is sometimes called PI3Kδ. p110δ and the other PI3Ks are hot drug targets for the pharmaceutical industry as they are implicated in many cancers and are readily treatable.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #4b4b4b; font-family: 'PT Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 13.60000228881836px; line-height: 21px; margin-bottom: 21px;">
</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #4b4b4b; font-family: 'PT Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 13.60000228881836px; line-height: 21px; margin-bottom: 21px;">
“Our work shows that p110δ inhibitors can shift the balance from the cancer becoming immune to our body’s defenses towards the body becoming immune to the cancer, by disabling regulatory T cells,” says study co-leader Dr Klaus Okkenhaug of the Babraham Institute, which receives strategic funding from the BBSRC. “This provides a rationale for using these drugs against both solid and blood cancers, possibly alongside cancer vaccines, cell therapies and other treatments that further promote tumor-specific immune responses.”</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #4b4b4b; font-family: 'PT Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 13.60000228881836px; line-height: 21px; margin-bottom: 21px;">
Professor Nic Jones, Cancer Research UK’s chief scientist and director of the Manchester Cancer Research Centre, said: “Treatments that train the immune system to recognize and kill cancer cells are showing huge promise in several types of cancer. This new finding, although only at an early stage, offers the potential to develop more treatments that can do this in many more cancers, including ones that have real need for more effective treatments such as pancreatic cancer.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #4b4b4b; font-family: 'PT Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 13.60000228881836px; line-height: 21px; margin-bottom: 21px;">
“If the findings hold true in cancer patients this could make a big difference to many of them. The good news is that because the drugs used in this study are already being used in the clinic, we could see rapid translation of this research into patient benefit.”</div>

<strong style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">(CNN)</strong> -- William "Kyle" Carpenter lost most of his jaw and an eye when he fell on a grenade to shield a fellow Marine from the blast. Nat Turner was working as a <a class="t-company" href="http://quotes.wsj.com/GOOGL" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #115b8f; font-size: 15.200002670288086px; margin: 0px; outline: none; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; word-wrap: break-word;">Google</a> Inc. <span class="article-chiclet up" data-channel-currency="$" data-channel-last-price="564.99" data-channel-path="/quotes/nls/googl" data-country-code="US" data-ticker-code="GOOGL" data-utc-offset-hours="-4" style="background: rgb(234, 250, 234); border-bottom-left-radius: 4px; border-bottom-right-radius: 4px; border-top-left-radius: 4px; border-top-right-radius: 4px; border: 1px solid rgb(33, 166, 33); cursor: pointer; display: inline-block; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.2rem; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px 5px; position: relative; vertical-align: baseline;"><span class="ticker" style="background: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 13.60000228881836px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 15px 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><a href="http://quotes.wsj.com/GOOGL" style="background: transparent; color: #21a621; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, Geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 1.3rem; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; outline: none; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; text-transform: uppercase; vertical-align: baseline; word-wrap: break-word;">GOOGL <span style="background: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 12.800002098083496px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">+0.77%</span></a></span></span> product manager when he learned that his seven-year-old cousin, Brennan, had been diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia.</div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 1em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
He observed the boy's dad traveling all over the country interviewing different cancer specialists about his son's case, all the while carrying stacks of DVDs and medical files, because medical specialists couldn't easily share information with one another.</div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 1em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Brennan's treatment entailed initial misdiagnoses, and eventually four bone-marrow transplants that drove the disease into remission. Mr. Turner and his former University of Pennsylvania classmate Zach Weinberg, with whom he had founded Invite Media, an ad tech firm acquired by Google in 2010 for $81 million, began building a new business gathering data on cancer treatments and outcomes over time. Vast amounts of data sit in doctors' and nurses' notes, unused, that might lead to insights about treatment efficacy, they figured.</div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 1em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
But they faced a fearsome learning curve.</div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 1em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
At first, they set out to create a second-opinion service that would make it possible for patients like Brennan and their families to pull up treatments and survival statistics. But after months of research, the two-time entrepreneurs concluded that their New York-based startup, Flatiron Health, would have greater impact if they changed the focus of their platform to connect doctors and cancer centers to one another, for the sake of sharing data that might help them make more informed treatment decisions. Their goal was finding and presenting the data. It would be up to oncologists to analyze it and make treatment decisions.</div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 1em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The duo spent longer than they expected convincing oncology chiefs and the facilities' chief information officers to give up some patient information. Some doctors and administrators, Mr. Turner says, weren't comfortable with the idea of sharing case information, which they felt was proprietary.</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 1em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
All information about actual patients and treatments is protected by strict federal privacy laws, so Flatiron spent a full year building a secure architecture for anonymized data, and hired a full-time privacy officer to deal with the many privacy audits that cancer centers subject Flatiron to.</div>

Most treatments for cancer are based on protocols developed from clinical trials. Outcome reporting can lag for a while until papers are published. Flatiron gathers data that weren't previously available and shareable, the 96% of cases where the patient didn't participate in a clinical trial.</div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 1em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Revenue comes to two-year-old Flatiron from charging cancer centers for access to its database and by joining with life-science companies on their research. The centers contribute specific information about actual cases, with patient names taken off. This includes the course of treatment prescribed, and the outcome. Every cancer center has lots of such information: If they contribute theirs, they get access to the whole Flatiron database, and their doctors can see a much wider data set as they prescribe courses of treatment.</div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 1em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Today, Flatiron Health has 105 employees, and half of those are engineers. More than 200 cancer centers in the U.S. either use or are testing its database, which holds information about more than 550,000 cancer cases. This spring, it received Google Ventures' largest-ever investment in a medical-software company, $130 million. Mr. Turner, age 28, recently spoke to The Wall Street Journal about his struggles so far to build the business, which he expects to break even within a few years. Edited excerpts:</div>

It felt like we should be able to use the Internet to connect doctors with patients.</div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 1em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Our idea changed when we came across a statistic that just boggled our minds. Only 4% of cancer patients over the age of 18 participate in clinical trials.</div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 1em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
A lymphoma doctor I met in Boston told me: 'I see 200 lymphoma patients each year, but there are more than 5,000 lymphoma cases in the U.S. each year. I would really like to see what's happening with the treatment of these cases.'</div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 1em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
We had a lot of trouble with the politics of cancer centers and getting them to agree to participate and add data. The first three or four said yes, but then the next five said, 'Why would we give you that information? That's our intellectual property. That's a security risk.' We needed a better strategy.</div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 1em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
We started investing in the software, because we had to have something that we could show to cancer centers. 'Give us your data, and our platform will make it valuable.' This wasn't easy. We spent a year and a half building OncoAnalytics, the data platform. The database grew slowly for the first year. We just stayed busy building a high-fidelity demo, to get the centers to agree to sign on. We did a lot of evangelizing.</div>

<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 1em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">

At Invite Media, we made sense of disparate sources of advertising inventory. Google, Facebook, AOL, Yahoo—they all have ad space, but they all sell it different ways. The bidding process is all different, company by company. We allowed marketers to place one universal campaign in our system, and our system normalized it and standardized it. An ad is an ad, right?</div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 1em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
In cancer care, the disease is similar between one facility and another but each facility has different ways of capturing and storing information about it. So, we're normalizing cancer data.</div>

It's still long hours, but you don't stress as much about little things. Fundraising and recruiting get easier, once you've made a bunch of connections.</div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 1em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Invite Media was considered a good acquisition for Google, so that gave us credibility. Most doctors use Gmail and YouTube and Android phones, and they love these things. They remember Google Health, and they love Google. The academic centers, they feared that we could go bankrupt, because we're just a little company. But Google is not going bankrupt, they realized.</div>
